Mike Stoddard is best known for creating thought-provoking and absurd paintings of ordinary objects in unusual situations, such as his ongoing series of headless people. With strong influences from the surrealists and pop art his work often challenges the viewers’ preconception of reality by giving new meaning to familiar things. His subject matter frequently includes people, animals, and cars depicted representationally, as well as abstractly, with bold colors and dense patterns. Communication technology is a recurring and subtle theme throughout much of his work. In addition to painting, he also works with metal and glass to make sculptural art. Stoddard received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2010 and currently resides in the greater Boston area.
